Biography of Bernard Dwyer

HERITAGE NO : 973
Bernard Dwyer by Dave Dooley:

Bernard Dwyer was one of the best ever professionals to play for the Saints. His effort and commitment were always total. His tackling was exemplary and in attack he could always be relied upon to take the right option. Bernard was extremely strong especially close to the opponents line. When you also consider that he had neat footwork and was a reliable goal-kicker his value to be the Saints during a 12 year career was immense. He was signed from the local outfit, the Hare and Hounds ARL Club in April 1984 and made his debut against Hull in a 46 points to 24 defeat on the 27th of February, 1985. Bernard was a natural hooker but could also play as well in the second row or loose forward. In his first season he had just one start and two substitutes appearances in a team inspired by the great Mal Meninga. At seventeen years old he was a little too inexperienced to fill the boots of Graham Liptrot when injury forced `Lippy` to miss the remainder of that glorious season. Instead Saints brought in Gary Ainsworth on loan from Leigh leaving Bernard to cheer on his team-mates as they waltzed off with the Premiership Trophy at Elland Road in the last match of the campaign.

The following season was a similar affair as Bernard plied his apprenticeship in the `A` Team. Bernard made five starts and came on as substitute four times. These appearances included a debut try and six goals for Bernard as part of the 72 points to 8 demolition of Carlisle in the first round of the Lancashire Cup. This match opened some spectators` eyes with regard to the potential of the then youngster. In the 1986/7 campaign Bernard featured more as a loose forward. There was a plethora of quality hookers on the Saints` books at the time including Graham Liptrot, Dave Harrison and Mark Lee and competition was fierce. As Bernard`s profile was rising his repertoire was expanding. He kicked his one and only drop goal for the club in a tense 17 points all draw with Warrington. Bernard also chipped in with a try against Barrow and four goals in two other matches. At the end of the season Bernard watched his colleagues lose a gripping Challenge Cup Final against Halifax by one point with Graham Liptrot still clinging onto the elusive number nine shirt.

The 1987/8 season saw the retirement of Graham Liptrot and many expected Bernard to finally claim a regular starting place in the side in the number nine jersey. However, coach Alex Murphy moved into the transfer market and snapped up Paul Groves who went on to have a sensational season. Bernard`s thirteen appearances were consistently impressive and included four tries. He missed out on the John Player Trophy Final when saints defeated Leeds by the odd point in 29. However, in the last match of the campaign Bernard did get his first taste of Finals football when he was selected as substitute to play Widnes in the Premiership Final at Old Trafford. Unfortunately, Saints were no match for the Chemics on that particular day and ran out 38 points to 14 losers.

In his fifth season at the tender age of 21, Bernard finally became a regular member of the first team in the 1988/9 season. Playing mostly in the second row, Bernard nipped in for seven tries in 32 appearances. However, this campaign brought about a reality check for all at Knowsley Road as Saints had a miserable season finishing seventh in the league and being whitewashed by the old enemy Wigan at Wembley. Bernard played in the second row in that never to be remembered Challenge Cup Final.

The 1989/90 season was somewhat truncated for Bernard as he missed much of the mid-season through injury. He managed to return in February and scored a try from the substitutes` bench to help defeat Leeds by 32 points to 26.

Bernard made 28 appearances in the 1990/1 season either at hooker or in the second row. The Saints rattled up the points unfortunately the side was defensively stretched in many games and 11 losses in the league left Cooper`s men in sixth position in the league. After a fabulous performance in the 19 points to 2 semi-final win over Widnes in the Challenge Cup semi-final, Dwyer got the nod ahead of Paul Groves to start the Challenge Cup Final against the old enemy. However, Saints fell at the final hurdle as Wigan held on to a handy half time lead to prevail by 13 points to 8. This was the third occasion that Bernard had left a Final on the losing side.

Bernard`s ambition for a winner`s medal was thwarted in the following campaign (1991-92) as he played a full part in the Lancashire Cup campaign of 1991. In the first round Saints were up against Trafford Borough. Bernard was given the goal-kicking duties in the absence of Paul Loughlin. The `ton-up boys` destroyed the opposition with no fewer than twenty tries. Bernard`s trusty left boot kicked twelve goals as part of the massacre. Dwyer and the Saints had a blinder against Wigan in the Lancashire Cup semi-final, as Saints prevailed by 28 points to 16. Bernard scored an absolutely cracking try and with the old enemy out of the way Bernard could lokk forward to collecting his first winner`s medal with the club. Cruel luck intervened however and injury meant that when ten days later the Saints went on to record a 24 points to 14 win over Rochdale Hornets in the Lancashire Cup Final at Warrington, Bernard was a luckless spectator. He ended the season with a total of seven tries and 12 goals from 31 appearances. The side also settled down that season and finished a comfortable second position in the league but still somewhat adrift from Wigan at the top.

Bernard played 37 matches in the 1992/3 season and monopolised the hooker`s number nine jersey. The last ever Lancashire Cup Final saw Saints pitted against Wigan at Knowsley Road. In a thrilling, bruising encounter Saints lost out by one point. Bernard kicked Saints` only points that afternoon and yet again a loser`s medal was scant consolation for a monumental effort. Later that year Bernard gave one of his finest displays in the Boxing Day match against Wigan in 1992. He was involved play all over the pitch as Saints whipped the boys from Wigan by a fabulous score-line of 41 points to 6. Everyone felt that the balance of power was finally shifting westwards over Billinge Lump after that game but at the end of the season Saints lost out to Wigan on points difference at the top of the table following an 8 points all drawn match at Central Park. Finally, some consolation came however in the last match of the season as Bernard and the Saints defeated Wigan by 10 points to 4 in the 1993 Premiership Final at Old Trafford. That day Bernard produced another superb all round game and at last he had a winner`s medal to polish! Bernard also collected a career best 68 points that season from 4 tries and 26 goals.

The loss of Gary Connolly in the backs and Kevin Ward in the pack was too great for the following campaign as Saints slumped to eighth place in the league. Bernard however had one of his best ever seasons in attack as he supported beautifully all year to sniff out a very creditable ten-try haul. This total included two braces against Halifax and Hull. Youngblood was the order of the day with Bernard and Shane Cooper was acting as their main mentors on the field. At the end of the 1993/4 season, the Saints were again disappointed to be staring at an empty trophy cabinet.

Bernard missed out on the first 11 matches of the 1994/5 campaign only to return as substitute against Australia on November 1st., 1994. He scored a typical poacher`s try as the Saints pushed the tourists all the way to lose out by 32 points to 14. His return also coincided with a fresh challenge for the number nine jersey in the shape of a fresh faced Kieron Cunningham. Another injury forced Bernard to sit on the touchlines for a couple of months from mid-January to late March 1995. His try against Wakefield Trinity on April 2nd. 1995, as part of a 56 points to 14 league victory, proved to be his last points for the club.

Bernard looked as fit as a fiddle at the commencement of the 1995/6 season. The number nine jersey was very much in the capable hands of Kieron Cunningham and Bernard settled into other positions in the pack. The acquisition of players of the calibre of Scott Gibbs, Apollo Perelini and Bobbie Goulding showed that the Saints were serious about mounting a determined bid to end Wigan`s monopoly of the Rugby League silverware. The announcement of moves to revolutionise the game with a new summer era in a fully professional context signalled the end of Bernard`s Knowsley Road career. At twenty eight years of age and with bags of rugby left in his legs In November 1995, Bernard reluctantly departed the Knowsley Road scene as part of the World Record Transfer deal, which brought Paul Newlove to Saints. He enjoyed several highly successful seasons with Bradford Bulls, which culminated in two Challenge Cup Final defeats at the hands of St. Helens in 1996 and 1997 and the winning of the Super League Trophy in Super League II.

In any colours Bernard always gave his best and remained the model professional throughout his career. Ultimately he won every club honour in the game and all were thoroughly deserved.
