Biography of Alec Duffy |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 136 Alec Duffy by Alex Service The St. Helens Newspaper gives us some initial background of this player, after his debut against Swinton: "The home team had a new centre on view in the person of Duffy late of Wigan and Millom." He was obviously a good player, having made 29 appearances in the threequarter line for the Wigan team during the previous campaign. Interestingly enough, it appears that there were two people called Duffy who signed for Wigan initially. I think it is reasonable to assume that they were brothers as both came from Millom! H. Duffy, a forward, only made 5 appearances in the cherry and white. As for the Saints half of the brotherhood, he made quite an impression on debut and went on to play ten matches, scoring one try. He played in all threequarter positions for the Saints, together with two at stand-off. The Minutes of the St. Helens Committee give us an insight into the signing of Alec Duffy, from an entry on Wednesday 11th January 1905: "The Chairman reported the result of Sub-Committee's interview with the Wigan F.C. which resulted in the transfer of A. Duffy to this club for the sum of £20 and the transfer of G. Ellison in exchange for Joseph Green at a later stage. Alec Duffy was introduced to the Committee by the Secretary, he having just arrived from Millom." Alec Duffy's last match for the Saints was against Leeds at home on 15th April, when Saints lost 5-10. Alec Lived in Market Street Millom in 1911 and his occupation was listed as an Iron Ore Miner. In 1939 he had moved to Windsor Street, Millom. Alec died there in March 1954 at the age of 77. If anyone has any further details, we would like to hear from you. |
