Biography of Frank Drake

HERITAGE NO : 157
Frank Drake by Alex Service

The St.Helens Newspaper gave the following information to its readers on 27th September 1907: 'The supporters of the Saints will be glad to learn that the club has signed on a really good half-back in the person of Drake, who last season played for Salford. Drake is well-known as a clever player, either at half-back or threequarter and he will take his place behind the Saints pack in the game with Warrington tomorrow.'

At 5ft 4ins and 11 stones, he was 'built for grafting' and the Saints beat Warrington 7-6 on his Knowsley Road debut. Frank was stand-off to number seven Matt Creevey that afternoon. Unfortunately, despite all the hype, Frank made just 8 appearances in his St.Helens career, his last two being in the centre in 1908-09. He did make the news before a game against Wigan at Knowsley Road for 'failing to turn up.'

A signing from Egerton, Frank was a plumber and lived in Shawcross Street, Pendleton, Salford in 1911. He died in Southport in January 1937 aged 55.
