Edward Dowdall was a popular signing for the Saints. Two years previously he had been a sensational signing for Wigan and rumours circulated that the fee was in the region of £500. Eddie was a scrum-half with Newport before going north and was the reserve scrum-half for the international squad. The St.Helens Newspaper made the following observations: "Critics who have watched him repeatedly say he is the cleverest half-back who has left Wales. Only 25 years of age and a very decent young fellow, he should have many years of useful service with the Saints. Wigan were holding out for £200 or £300 but in view of the good relations that exist between the two teams we should imagine that they will have dealt as leniently as possible with the Saints."

Eddie played 31 times for his new club, scoring one try. His first match was in the Challenge Cup against the junior club Lindley; his last against Warrington in January 1930. The form of local lad Walter Groves was too good to see Eddie displace him from the team. He returned to Wales where he was living in Bryngwyn Road, Newport in 1939.
