Further information about Eli Dixon, by SHS:

Eli was a superb all-round footballer, with a range of skills that enabled him to produce an admirable record of achievement in his four seasons at City Road with the St Helens recreation team. Eli played full-back in the last match played by the Recs against Hull KR on 29 April 1939 and scored the last points, a conversion, for this great club before their untimely demise. A Saints player on occasions during the war years, he went on to play 41 games for Warrington, making his debut at the start of the truncated 1939-40 season. Eli and his brother Henry were cousins of Saints winger Harry Pimblett and they lived in Havelock Street. His St Helens Recreation Playing Number is 162.

This is the biography of Eli that appeared in the Recs’ history They Bled Red Amber and Black.

Eli Dixon was a superb all-round footballer, with a range of skills that enabled him to produce an admirable record of achievement in his four seasons at City Road. He was quite aggressive on the field and could play well wherever he was selected, as this appreciation in the St. Helens Reporter, on 2 November 1937 reveals: “After playing a blinder at full-back in the Oldham match last week, Eli Dixon returned to the team to show what a useful and penetrative centre he is. His breaks down the middle whenever he could escape the Widnes ‘spotters’ were always dangerous.” Eli also handled the kicking duties in his first full season, 1936-37, when he booted the leather between the sticks on 49 occasions.

Eli was two years older than his brother, Henry, who also joined him in Recs’ First Team almost two years later. Eli’s preferred position was stand-off; Henry was a scrum-half. Eli played full-back in Recs’ last-ever match, against Hull KR on 29 April 1939, filling in for the injured Peter Lythgoe. To him rested the unwanted distinction of scoring the Recs’ last-ever points in professional rugby league, when he converted Albert Bailey’s try. He also turned out in the centres on numerous occasions for the Recs and was the archetypal utility back. Eli went on to play 41 games for Warrington, making his debut at the start of the truncated 1939-40 campaign. His last match was in September 1946. Eli and his brother were cousins of Saints’ winger Harry Pimblett and they lived in Havelock Street. Eli also played a few games for the Saints during the war years.
