Biography of Sean Devine



HERITAGE NO : 992
Sean Devine was a Rugby League player at Golborne Comprehensive School and featured highly in the Derek McHugh coached Rugby League side. Alongside Ian Gildart for Wigan, Sean was signed by a top flight club, namely The Saints, and featured in 35 games and 4 at sub, including a half back appearance against Wigan in the 1990 Challenge Cup Semi Final, which the Saints narrowly lost 14-20. He left Saints for Oldham.

Sean made his debut at the latter end of the 1986-87 campaign, against Castleford at Wheldon Road and opportunities were limited at the time given the outstanding form of Neil Holding and Brett Clark. Sean was in the halves with another young half-back prospect, Paul Doherty, but the Saints lost narrowly 8-10 to the Yorkshiremen, on 1st April.

Although first team opportunities were limited initially, Sean was a regular squad member from 1989 to 1991, making over 30 appearances. He was a lively customer, with good hands and anticipation, as you would expect a half-back to be and he also was a competent goal kicker. Although he experienced heartbreak during the Challenge Cup semi-final against Wigan at Old Trafford in 1990, one of his most memorable matches was against Castleford earlier in the campaign at Knowsley Road, when the Saints were not exactly down as favourites after a poor run of form. In one of the most memorable victories, they gave the visitors the run around and won 39-12, with Sean notching 9 goals.

Sean’s last game for the first team was also a Challenge Cup tie, against Swinton at Manchester City’s Maine Road ground, when Saints beat Swinton in the first round 18-8, when Sean was partnered by Welshman Jon Griffiths.

The football link was apparent once more on 10th January 2021 when Sean’s son, Alfie, came off the bench to become the youngest debutant for Spurs at 16 years 163 days, when they played Marine in the FA Cup. He scored shortly after too, in front of a large TV audience. Family sporting DNA was truly in evidence.
