Biography of George Dennett

HERITAGE NO : 360
George Dennett by SHS

There is a certain lack of information relating to this player. In the Players Registers, he classes his home address as Turner Street, Warrington. We do know that George was later transferred to Broughton Rangers on 1st October 1930, but there is little detail in between. He first came to prominence during a Practice Match in August 1928, when Premier, the Newspaper correspondent, whose real name was Tom Reynolds, gave this assessment of the players capabilities: "Dennetts build is ideal for a stand-off half. He is muscling up beautifully in the legs and from the hips downwards in a second edition of Booysen, the Wigan crack. From the very first pass he received, Dennett gave Jones his full weight or bumper and then went on to make an opening which ended in a try. If there was not a first-class half-back here, not merely in the making, but already four fifths on the way, I am no judge of a player. His perfect pass when on the run is worthy of Fairclough and Lewis, two of the most accomplished artistes known in the game of delivering a perfect pass. If we can just cultivate a little local patriotism in Dennett and make him realise that he is not a stranger within our gates, St.Helens should get great results from him. Strong half-backs like him are not found every day."

Unfortunately, as a result of the superb form of international stand-off Leslie Fairclough, chances were relatively few for George, although he did make 22 appearances at First Team level, scoring 4 tries. He went to Broughton, his rugby trail ends there. However, we do know that he was living in Alder Lane, Warrington in 1939 and working as a General Labourer. He died in Warrington in December 1979, aged 73. If anyone has any further information relating to this player, we would be delighted to hear from you.
