Biography of Andy Dannatt |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 1045 Andy came to St Helens from Hull with a reputation as a hard working forward with sound all round skills. He played 41 matches for the first team and scored two tries against Leeds and Oldham in consecutive matches in November 1993. Andy was well liked at Knowsley Road but returned to East Yorkshire to join Hull KR shortly before the Super League era. Dave Dooley Andy Dannatt by Adrian Lawrenson At one stage in the 1980s it seemed that the city of Hull was the centre of the rugby league universe. Not only were both the Red and Whites and the Black and Whites attracting the best players form the Southern Hemisphere, but their Colts were of the highest quality. In this era, Hull produced such stars as Garry Schofield, Lee Crooks, Gary Divorty and our man Andy Dannatt. Andy played four major finals for Hull gaining a Premiership winner’s medal in 1991 and it was considered something of a coup when he signed for Saints on 23 September 1993, making his debut in the 35-18 win at Castleford on 26 September 1993. A powerful, direct runner, he was signed as a direct replacement for Kevin Ward who had his career so tragically cut short by injury. As with all transfers you need the timing to be right and a lot of luck. Saints had nearly solved the conundrum in the 1992-93 season losing the league on goal difference, the Lancashire Cup final by a point and winning the Premiership and dusting Wigan 41-6 on Boxing Day 1992. However, 1993-94 it was, and Saints without Ward and Gary Connolly never reached the same heights as the previous year and consequently Andy was not playing in a team on the front foot. He did, however, play 41 games, with 10 off the bench for the club, scoring 2 tries and signed off against his hometown club Hull FC on 12 March 1995 in a 43-32 win against the homesters, who were not really the power they had been previously. Andy subsequently returned home, this time to the East side of Hull to the Robins, who had also fallen back from the halcyon days of the 1980s. One wonders what would have happened if he could have remained at Knowsley Road until the dawn of the Super League era, but that, of course, is mere conjecture. |
