Biography of Joe Cunliffe

HERITAGE NO : 457
Joe Cunliffe by Dave Dooley and SHS

Joe Cunliffe, who originated from the Mill Lane area of Sutton, played just two matches for the Saints in 1936 and 1937. Strong and mobile, he played on the wing against Hull KR and at loose forward against Dewsbury. Both games were close affairs with the Saints losing the former but getting the upper hand against Dewsbury.

An old boy of Cowley School, Joe was interested in rugby from an early age and on leaving school, trained as a teacher at Chester College. He spent most of his career at Steers Street School in Liverpool. During the war he was a PTI in the RAF and re-joined his old school on his release, where he gave much time and enthusiasm towards developing sport.

Sad to relate that Joe passed away at the age of 40 after contracting tuberculosis. An extremely popular character in the local community of Thatto Heath and Nutgrove, he left behind his wife, Annie, who he married in 1939 and two young girls, Jennifer and Janet.

His final resting place is at Christ Church, following a funeral service at St John’s Church in Ravenhead.
