Biography of Tom Crellin

HERITAGE NO : 192
Thomas Crellin by Alex Service

By tradition the St.Helens club has always brought players down from the rugby hotbed of Cumbria and Thomas Crellin was no exception. A big, powerfully-built back-row forward, he played initially for Brookland Rovers and came down to Knowsley Road for one match during the 1909-10 season and impressed, although according to the local press he was "unfit for want of training."

At 5ft 9ins and about 14 stones, he was just 20 years of age and it was hoped that he would do the club many years of good service. "He has been eagerly sought after by several of the leading Northern Union clubs but the bait of the Saints has proved most tempting," wrote the St.Helens Newspaper. He made 31 appearances during his first season at Knowsley Road, at loose forward, yet only made one further appearance for the club, on 6th January 1912, at home to Wakefield Trinity, when the Saints lost 5-14. This would probably indicate an injury problem, although we cannot be sure.

In his playing days with the Saints Tom lived in Kirkland Street, St Helens. However, he returned to his home county and was living at 4 Grasslot Street, Maryport with his wife Violet and children Eleanor, Grace, George, William, James and John. He was employed as a heavy worker and stoneman in a Colliery. He died in December 1947 aged 57 in his hometown of Maryport with the death registered in Cockermouth.

Further information about Tom has since become available. At one stage he took up refereeing once his playing days were over. Tom moved to Nothumberland, as a lot did, to work down the mines and lived for a spell in Ashington, in the same street as the famous Milburn football family.
