Biography of Jimmy Creevey

Like his brothers, Jimmy was a reliable and flexible player being able to play anywhere in the threequarters or even at full back. He played a total of 49 matches for the Saints and scored 11 tries including braces against Batley, Barrow and Liverpool City. The former Pocket Nook Shamrock could also kick goals and the records show that Jimmy booted over 17 conversions in these games. Jimmy was immensely popular with his teammates and was Club Captain for a spell. Along with his brothers Charlie and Matt, Jimmy played together against Wigan on Good Friday , 1907. This feat has never been replicated by three brothers. Jimmy continued his career at Runcorn where he played 21 matches scoring six tries in the process. This move seems to have coincided with his developing business interests on the Wirral.

Outside rugby Jimmy was a fish salesman and he made a great success of the venture. He resided in Moreton Road, Birkenhead in 1939 and was described as a retired Hotel Proprietor. At some point Jimmy had moved from the Fish business into the hospitality sector. It is thought that Jimmy tried to start a Rugby League Club in Birkenhead later on in life. Jimmy was living in Dawpool Drive, Wallasey at the time of his death in January 1955 at the age of 73. His wife, Helen (née Bonney) had died four years earlier. He was survived by one daughter, Mary Breen, to whom he left the sum of £21000. This legacy demonstrates how successful Jimmy had been in his various ventures. That sum in today’s money equates to around £400 000.
