Biography of Charlie Creevey

HERITAGE NO : 99
Charles Creevey by Alex Service and Dave Dooley

Another member of the famous sporting family from the Pocket Nook district of St.Helens, Charlie Creevey was a powerful right wing threequarter who made his debut for the Saints on 7th September 1901 against Wigan at Knowsley Road, as a right centre. The 1903-04 season was particularly successful for Creevey, with 15 tries from 24 appearances in the red, amber and black jersey worn by the Saints at the time. Always capable of scoring tries, Charlie notched four in the defeat of Barrow on 19th December 1905 at Knowsley Road. He could also kick goals too. If you look carefully at the matches played by Charlie at this time you will notice a career gap between March and December 1906. One might assume a serious injury had befallen the star three quarter. However, what had transpired was that Charlie was enjoying his very own gap year. In March 1906 at the tender age of 22, Charlie boarded the ill fated Lucitania in Liverpool and sailed to New York. This trip would shape much of the rest of his life. In December he returned to St Helens in time for Christmas Dinner and a Christmas Day Match against Liverpool City. Charlie prepared for the feast by running in four tries and kicking one goal.

On Good Friday 1907 Charlie and his brothers,Matt and Jimmy, created history by playing in the first team together against Wigan. Since then no family has ever replicated that feat for the Saints. After seven years in the St.Helens team, Charlie became a target for Wigan and signed for them on 21st January 1908. He scored 6 tries and kicked 11 goals in 14 appearances for the Riversiders before returning to Knowsley Road. As right centre to the great Tom Barton, Charlie had a superb season in 1909-10, scoring 10 tries in 28 appearances, with 17 goals for good measure. After that he was to play just one more match for the club before retirement at the ripe old age of 26. His brothers, Jimmy and Matt continued with the First Team for St.Helens. Jimmy captained the team for a spell. It is ironical that as a Wigan player, Charlie achieved county recognition that was denied him as a Saint.

The rest of Charlie’s life was no less adventurous. In 1912 Charlie emigrated to the USA with his wife Elizabeth and two daughters where he settled in the State of Michigan. He was variously employed including a spell as a bricklayer in a car factory in 1920. The family further expanded with the births of four sons. in the 1940s One of his offsprings, John Francis Creevey, became a prominent player for Notre Dame University, the Fighting Irish. Furthermore, his grandson Tom Creevey also was a very talented American Football and Basketball player. So much so that defensive end Tom, following in his father’s footsteps, inspired Notre Dame University to become National Collegiate Champions in 1973. Charlie Creevey would have loved to see his grandson play in that famous season. Sadly Charlie had passed away in Clawson, Oakland, Michigan in January 1967 at the age of 82 after a full and exciting life.
