Biography of Len Constance

HERITAGE NO : 653
Len Constance by Alex Service

Len actually played his first match for the Saints against Wigan as a trialist called Johnson. Indeed, Johnson did much to keep the Wigan stand-off Mountford quiet and was duly signed by the club. Born in Pontypool, Constance was the latest link in Saints ambitious post-war team-building plans.
Lt. Leonard Constance RNVR to give him his full title was five feet five and weighed just over ten stones, but he was a real handful for opposing stand-offs to keep in check. He played for several rugby union clubs, including Bristol, Portsmouth, the Royal Navy and was the fly-half for the Hampshire County team. After his first appearance for the Saints he played for a Combined Services XV at Bordeaux. Len was actually released from the Royal Navy the day before his first official match for the Saints against Leeds.

Len later joined Dewsbury and then signed for Wigan in the early fifties, where he played 30 matches for the Central Park club. It is believed that he taught at Rivington Road School in St.Helens, where another Welshman, centre Don Gullick also taught. Len was a popular member of the team at Knowsley Road and is yet another Welshman to have played in a St.Helens jersey, especially in the 1940s and 1950s. He died back in his home Welsh county in October 1990, aged 67.
