Biography of Ross Conlon |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 978 Ross Conlon by Alex Service Ross Conlon will always be remembered as a specialized goal-kicker, in the same vein as Daryl Halligan, Hazem el Mazri and Frano Botica. He had a technique that was all his own, a round-the-corner kicker with a sort of sideways shuffle before coming in to strike the football. Apparently this gave him more time and he credited this particular trait to his days as a soccer player up to the age of fifteen. (rumour has it he was a big Manchester United fan!) Ross was graded with the Western Suburbs team in Sydney in 1980 and signed with Canterbury Bankstown in 1983. The following year he played State of Origin football and played against the 1984 Great Britain tourists in the First Test. He joined Balmain Tigers in 1985 and he became one of the most consistent points scorers in the game, leading the competition table in 1987 with 196 points. Ross signed for the Saints for the 1985-86 season. Although his experience was much valued, it was a difficult time for the team, who could not replicate their successes of the previous campaign. A former Canterbury Bulldog too, Ross retired somewhat prematurely at the end of the 1988 season and coached in country football, leading Uralla Tigers to a premiership in 2007. He is a school teacher by profession. |
