Biography of Joseph Clarke

Joseph Clarke was a back who played three consecutive matches for the Saints in September 1897. He was born in St. Helens and grew up in the Gerards Bridge area of the town. In 1891 he was already working as a labourer in a local glassworks. Joseph had various jobs as a glass worker, miner or brick maker. The last mentioned occupation was his trade when the family lived in Mount Street, St Helens in 1901. After this date Joseph moved to Mirfield, Yorkshire to work as a colliery labourer. he married Edith Sutcliffe in 1909 and inherited a few step-children. His widow, Edith, was on the 1921 Census and Joseph was alive in 1915 so he died between these dates around the age of 35.
