Biography of Brett Clark

HERITAGE NO : 987
Brett Clark by Alex Service

Although Brett Clark might not be classed as a big name overseas signing by the Saints and there were many internationals coming over to play in the Old Dart at the time, he was, nonetheless a brilliant capture, slotting in perfectly in the number six jumper. Brett was quick in both movement and thought, with excellent hands and was a brilliant tackler for his size. He could score tries too! From his debut, against Salford on 3rd September 1986 he played in 36 consecutive matches, as the Saints hunted league and cup honours. It was a great pity that the team itself, though blessed with tremendous attacking players like Brett's half-back partner Neil Holding and wingers Barrie Ledger and Kevin McCormick, could not beat Wigan during the campaign. The Riversiders finished top of the league with 56 points from 30 matches; Saints came second with 41.

The Challenge Cup run provided the best chance for honours and Saints flew Brett over for the final, with the permission of his Australian club Wests, for the clash against Halifax's Dad's Army outfit. Unfortunately, the Yorkshiremen spoiled the party by pulling off a sensational 18-19 success and Brett had played his last match in the red vee of St.Helens. He stayed just for the season at Knowsley Road, but came back later to play for Oldham and Rochdale Hornets. After a spell at amateurs Mayfield, he had a last hurrah with Swinton before returning Down Under.
