Biography of Albert Clare |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 211 Albert Clare by SHS News of this player's signing was given in the St. Helens Newspaper on 14th March 1911: "On Saturday Sergeant Major Hannaford, who is still, as ever prepared to do all he can for the club, went over to Warrington and saw Stockton Heath youth. The persuasive powers of the gallant Sergeant Major were successful and he succeeded in signing on Clare for the Saints. The player's reputation is so good and good judges tell me that he is a really capable exponent that I expect the Saints will include him in the team to meet Leigh next Saturday. The capture is regarded as an important one". Born in Warrington and described in the 1911 Census as a gas stove fitter Albert was in demand from his home-town club and Rochdale, but chose to come to Knowsley Road. Albert made his debut against Leigh at scrum-half, with Harold Greenwood at stand-off half. The St. Helens Newspaper talked about "the great interest shown in the lad's display in a position which has never been really satisfactorily filled since Matt Creevey finished with the club". The correspondent went on to say that "he is strong on defence, his tackling is correct and sure, but he lacks experience on the attack. A little bit of polish will bring him up to concert pitch". Indeed, although a stand-off, his first three matches for Saints were at scrum-half, with Harold Greenwood as his stand-off. His final three, at the end of the 1910-11 season, were on the right wing, with Jimmy Greenwood as his centre. His final game in the seniors saw Saints defeated by Rochdale Hornets at the Athletic Grounds. Albert was living in Swithamley Road, Stockport in 1939 and his occupation was listed as a Labourer in a Wire Works. He died in Stockport in September 1969 at the age of 81. |
