Biography of William Caveney

HERITAGE NO : 12
William Caveney was one of the cornerstones of the Saints pack of forwards inn the early days of the Northern Union. He played 83 matches for the club and scored a solitary try in the match against Leigh in November 1895. He played in an early 1897 Challenge Cup tie but missed out on selection for the Final. William was found living in Cambridge Road, St Helens in 1939. A local chemical works labourer and employee at Forsters Glassworks he stayed in the town until his death in June 1940 at the age of 65.

Further information about William Caveney, by Adrian Lawrenson and SHS

William Caveney was born on 8th April 1875 and was one of Saints’ Originals who played in the first-ever Northern Union fixture against Rochdale Hornets on 7th September 1895. He was employed, as so many were, as a chemical labourer at Forsters Glassworks.

In that initial season, William made 25 appearances scoring a try at home to Leigh on 2nd November 1895. The following year he appeared in a further 28 games, doubling his tally of tries. The 1896-97 season was a notable one for the Saints because they made it all the way to the final of the inaugural Challenge Cup competition. William played in the first round against the junior club, Lees. The mists of time do not clarify whether it it was injury or loss of form that led William to be replaced by Sam Rimmer. However, the day before the semi-final, Saints turned out a scratch team in a friendly against Halifax on 16th April 1897 in which William took part.

What is evident is that William was the travelling reserve at Headingley on 24th April 1897 for the final against Batley and stands proudly on the team photograph before the match. Another fact that must be mentioned is that William was awarded a medal for this campaign which is still in existence and is a proud possession of one of William’s descendants, who now have a Heritage Number Certificate to go with his Challenge Cup winner’s runner’s up medal.

William’s career encompassed 83 competitive appearances and a further 17 in friendlies, until his last match for the club in the new Millennium on 22nd December 1900, at Broughton Rangers, in a 29-0 defat against powerful opponents at the time.

William continued to live in the town until his death in June 1940, aged 65. Just how much the club owes the efforts of these early pioneers is inestimable!
