George Case by Dave Dooley
This former Blackbrook loose forward had the toughest of First Team debuts when he was drafted in on the left wing to mark Wigan`s Billy Boston, at Central Park on April 28th 1962. Despite a 12 points to 3 defeat, Case did his job well and the big Welshman did not score. The following week, however, Boston scored seven tries against Salford! George played mostly with the `A` team until he damaged his ankle in a club pre-season trial match in 1963, which ended his career. These matches were dispensed with from the following season because of the risk of injury to key players. George`s son, Brian won many honours in the game as a prop forward with Warrington and Wigan - and was on the coaching staff at Knowsley Road for a spell.
In his first season George had one more outing with the first team. This was in the last match of the season when the Saints defeated Huddersfield at Fartown by 16 points to 9. On this occasion George played in a more familiar role wearing the number 12 jersey. His third and last appearance for the first team was in the 27 points to 14 victory home league over Hull on the 22nd of December, 1962. George was in the loose forward berth packing down behind legends like Dagnall, Watson, French, Huddart and Major.
In 1939, George was a schoolboy living in O`Sullivan Crescent, St Helens. He died in St Helens in August 2003 aged 67.
