Biography of Frank Carlton

HERITAGE NO : 715
Frank Carlton by Dave Dooley:

Frank Carlton was a stalwart for the club playing over 150 matches mostly as a winger. Born on the 21st March 1936 in St Helens, he signed for the Club from the famous RL hotbed, Parr Central School, on 17th., November 1952. Frank made his debut away against Huddersfield in the 10 points all draw on the 6th. April 1953. Frank only played two matches in his first two seasons.

His first try was against Widnes in the first match of the 1954/55 season. Frank seemed to enjoy playing against Rochdale Hornets as he bagged two hat-tricks in league matches against them that season. He ended the season as the team`s top try scorer with 33 tries. The 1955/56 was the most prolific in Frank`s career with career best 40 tries including three hat-tricks against Barrow, Liverpool City and Swinton, with a stunning four try performance in the 53 points to 6 demolition of Bradford Northern in the third round of the Challenge Cup. In the 1956/7 season Frank was joint top scorer for Saints with Steve Llewellyn, each winger scoring 33 tries apiece. The haul included hat-tricks against Blackpool Borough and Rochdale Hornets (again!) with another four try feat, this time Huddersfield were the team under the cosh. The next season witnessed Frank score hat-tricks on successive Saturdays against Oldham and Warrington. However, he was limited to 16 games that season but still came back strong enough to persuade the Great Britain selectors to take him to Australia.

The next three seasons were topsy-turvy for any Saints hopefuls wanting to capture the number five jersey at Knowsley Road. With Tom Van Vollenhoven on the right wing scoring tries for fun, the Club chopped and changed the left wing position. Frank faced stiff opposition from Jan Prinsloo and other hopefuls. Frank Carlton only played 23 matches in his last two and a bit seasons at Knowsley Road but still bagged a very respectable 14 tries in those games. The transferring of both Jan Prinsloo to Wakefield Trinity and Frank Carlton to Wigan, eventually paved the way for a £11 000 world record transfer to bring Mick Sullivan to Knowsley Road.In 156 matches for the Saints Frank scored 129 tries (13th on the all-time list of top try scorers for Saints), kicked no goals for a total points aggregate of 387 points. This represents a strike rate of over 82 tries per 100 matches, (fourth rank).

This speedy, elusive winger was a member of the 1956 Challenge Cup winning team that defeated Halifax by 13 points to 2. In this match Brian Howard created a sensational try for Frank Carlton cutting through the Halifax defence to put the flying winger away to score near the posts. This sent Saints fans into rapture as caps, scarves, rattles and saucers flew into the air.

Frank finished Saints leading try scorer on three occasions. This consistency enabled Frank to be selected for the 1958 Touring Squad to Australia where he made the Test team on one occasion. Furthermore, Frank won two Lancashire and one England cap in his time with the Saints. Frank also played against the Australian touring side on November 24th. 1956 when the Saints inflicted a record defeat on the tourists by 44 points to 2.

His final match for the Club was against Swinton on the 21st. of September, 1960. Frank was subsequently sold to Wigan where he faced his former team-mates in the 1961 Challenge Cup Final, thankfully Frank was on the losing side that particular day! In a cheery and white jersey Frank continued his try-scoring feats and was again selected to participate on the 1962 Australian Tour.

FOND FAREWELL FOR SAINT CARLO

A tribute by Denis Whittle

MISTY-EYED memories of Saints first-ever Challenge Cup triumph in 1956 will be stirred by the death of a legend whose brilliant try laid the foundation for the Knowsley Road side's ultimate success.
Flying winger Frank Carlton, of Eccleston Park, died in Whiston Hospital at the age of 72. His wife Joan passed away in 1999, and he leaves children Greg and Linda, four grandchildren, sisters Mary and Annie, and partner Enid Williams. Ranked among the town's favourite sporting sons Carlo, as he was popularly known, was a rare talent who also excelled on the athletics track, he was on the books of Everton FC and went on to earn his niche in Rugby League folklore.

Born in Blackbrook, Frank was a pupil at St, Marys and Parr Central schools, and it was here that he first revealed blistering pace, bewildering sidestep and Cumberland Throw tackling technique that stood him in good stead later when stopping burly opponents such as Billy Boston. And, by way of diversion from rugby, Carlton often appeared in Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas at school, with his starring role being that of Captain Cochran in HMS Pinafore.

He was contemporary with likes of Alec Davies, Bobby Chisnall and Eric Ledger before signing for Saints in 1953, for whom he went on to make 156 appearances during which he notched a remarkable 130 tries and was elevated to the Hall of Fame. An honour richly deserved in the opinion of Alex Murphy, who said Frank was the best locally-born winger he had seen.

Frank's touchdown at Wembley was vital, coming as it did after a scoreless first forty minutes, when he raced over from halfway following a shrewd pass from centre Brian Howard, leaving Fax players Arthur Daniels, Ken Dean and Johnny Freeman trailing in his wake. 'Good job my lad didn't knock on!' said his proud mother.
Tall, dark, handsome and a modest gentleman to boot, Frank toured Australia and New Zealand with the Rugby League Lions in 1958-62 and also represented England and Lancashire. He joined Wigan in 1960 and, ironically, marked Tom van Vollenhoven when Saints beat the Central Park team at Wembley twelve months later. A gas fitter by trade, Carlton appeared in Service's Rugby Union while in the RAF. Such was the regard for the man who enriched the lives of all who knew him that Blackbrook St.Marys Church was packed to the rafters for his funeral on Monday, March 2 2009.
