 HERITAGE NO : 294 Andrew was a Widnesian forward on the Saints books after World War One. He played six matches for the first team in November and December 1921. A labourer in a Copper Smelting Works by trade, his last known address was Dickson Street, Widnes. He died in his hometown in June 1951 aged 59. Dave Dooley We are most grateful to the top Widnes RL historian, Steve Fox, for his thorough research into all Widnes first team players and on this occasion his biography of Andy Caine. Steve informs us: As a child Andy attended the St Maries school in Widnes. Andy was a copper smelting process worker. His parents were Andrew Caine, born around 1864 in County Mayo, Ireland. His mother was Catherine Mahoney, born in Hanley, Staffordshire in August 1869. Andy Caine was signed from the Widnes White Star amateur club in March 1913 and went on to win a Lancashire League medal with Widnes in the 1919/20 season. After being discharged by the Leinster Regiment in 1914 as unfit for service due to a knee problem, he re-enlisted with the South Lancashire Regiment two years later during World War 1. Andy worked at Orrs Zinc White and JH Dennis & Co Ltd. He was a member of St Bedes CYMS and the Knights of St Columba. His brother, Bernard, died in action in 1918. Andy was the uncle of another Widnes player, Joe Ryan. Andy played 56 matches in the Forwards for Widnes from January 1914 to January 1921, scoring one try in the process.
