 HERITAGE NO : 873 Dave Brown by Alex Service Dave Brown was signed from Wigan Rugby Union Club and was the archetypal winger in terms of build, being five feet ten inches tall and twelve stones. He recorded a time of 9.9 seconds for the 100 yards, so he was certainly no slouch and held the try-scoring record for the Wigan Club, at one time scoring over 47 tries. Dave taught at St. Peter's School, Orrell and was a Lancashire county representative. He would have moved to Waterloo had he not signed for St. Helens. His debut was against St Gaudens, in the second leg of the European Championship at the end of the 1970-71 season, which Saints won 62-0, with Dave scoring one of the tries. During his time at Knowsley Road he made 19 appearances and scored twelve tries and never gave less than 100 percent. He was around at the time of two brilliant wingers at St. Helens, Les Jones and Roy Mathias, which limited his time at First Team level. Ironically, he came into the side at the last minute for the 1974 Club Championship clash with Warrington at Central Park, Wigan but did much to quell the effectiveness of Warrington winger John Bevan. Dave was later transferred to Leigh, to give him an increased chance of First Team football. He went on to play 30 matches for them, scoring 8 tries |
