Biography of Lee Briers |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 1074 Lee Briers by Alex Service A local lad, who came up via the Academy system at Knowsley Road, Lee showed from a very early age that he possessed a great rugby brain, which helped him to organise other players on the field from his role as a scrum-half. His big break came after the Challenge Cup tie against Wigan at Knowsley Road in 1997, when Bobbie Goulding faced an eight-match suspension after a fierce challenge against Neil Cowie. Lee took his place at seven and helped the Saints to reach Wembley for a second successive year, against Bradford Bulls. He was outstanding in the semi-final against Salford Reds at Central Park, Wigan, when the Saints blitzed their opponents by 50-20, including hat-tricks from Alan Hunte and Anthony Sullivan. Yet Goulding returned for the Wembley showpiece and in April, young Briers was transferred to Warrington for 65,000. The Saints duly signed Sean Long from Widnes in June for 80,000 to solve their subsequent lack of cover in the halves. Lee certainly became an idol of the Warrington fans, with his wily tactical approach, superb hands and astute kicking game. He enjoyed a well-deserved Testimonial with the Warrington club. In the twilight of his career, Lee was on hand when Warrington won three Challenge Cup Finals in four years between 2009 and 2012 including one Lance Todd Trophy performance from the man himself.. |
