Biography of John Brierley

HERITAGE NO : 138
John Brierley by Alex Service

John Brierley was from Chadderton, Oldham and was a threequarter back. Signed from Chadderton RUFC, we have relatively little information about him, except that he made his debut on the left wing when Saints played at Hull KR on 21st January 1905. His centre was Dave Traynor. The visitors lost 3-6 and John went on to play his last game for the club against Hull at Knowsley Road on 1st April. Once again the Saints were defeated, this time to the tune of 13-0. Having said that, it was a difficult time for the club and results were not exactly going their way.

Looking at Ancestry, it tells us that in 1901 John was aged 14 and a self actor minder in the cotton mill. For the uninitiated, this means that he was in charge of an automatic spinning machine. He was one of five children. Between 1911 and 1939 John had moved from Chadderton to Middleton. The 1939 Census has him residing in Mainsway, Middleton and he was listed as incapacitated. He died in 1960 in Oldham at the age of 72. Any further details would be welcome.
