William Brennan was a hooker, St.Helens-born, who was signed on 3rd September 1925 and made his full debut two days later at home to Widnes. He played 36 matches for the club, some as deputy for regular hooker Albert Simm, his last being against Swinton on 5th March 1927, a 3-24 loss for the Saints. Although we know relatively little about this player, a revealing paragraph in the St.Helens Newspaper on 14th August 1931 filled in some of the details: "Brennan started with Recs, went to Wigan, from Wigan to Batley and Hull and finally back to the home town, where he played for the Saints. Brennan was considered an unlucky player, especially when he had a leg hurt in a Saints-Recs match. Perhaps he was not so unlucky after all, as he was nearing the end of his football career and netted £125 in compensation."

Wigan records indicate that he played 8 matches for them in 1924, but that his origin was Batley, but somewhere along the line, the facts are maybe correct, although not in the right order.

Outside rugby, in 1939 William was living in Hardy Street, St Helens and working as a Labourer and Bricklayer in a Mine. He died in St Helens in June 1954, aged 59.
