 HERITAGE NO : 184 William Bradley by Alex Service and Dave Dooley To have played 50 games for the Saints is quite an achievement and this is what William Bradley did after signing for the club from Keighley in early January 1909. He joined St. Helens at the same time as two other Yorkshire lads, Bedworth and Isiah Harris, who were from the Castleford Half Acre club. Born in Keighley and employed as an engine fitter, William made his debut for the club at home to Broughton Rangers, although the Saints lost by 8-19. Bradley was a real stalwart of the pack in his one full season at Knowsley Road, making 34 appearances. His greatest match was probably the defeat of the touring Australians in 1909, when Saints won 9-0. His final game was at Hunslet on 27th December 1910, when the Saints lost 3-5 in a closely-fought encounter. We do not know what happened to him after this. Was he transferred to another club before the cup deadline? It would most probably have been in Yorkshire. In 1939 William was living in Chandon Street, Keighley. His death was registered in the Worth Valley in March 1957 at the age of 80. If anyone has any information about him, we would like to hear from you. |
