 HERITAGE NO : 523 This Welsh centre played for the club during World War Two and for a couple of seasons after the war. We are advised that Elwyn was a talented athlete and rugby player in the Neath area. Indeed he gets a praiseworthy mention in the Richard Burton autobiography. Apparently Burton played against Elwyn’s Old Boys team and went down to 22 points to 3 defeat with the future Saint playing a starring role. He scored six tries for the Saints including two braces against Featherstone Rovers and Halifax. In the latter game he also added two goals to his points haul as part of a 25 points to 13 home defeat in 1943. He retired from the game in 1947. Whist in St Helens Elwyn was a popular and respected teacher at Grange Park School where Steve Llewelyn and Geoff Pimblett would later be recruited to the teaching roster. Eventually he returned to Neath where he continued his teaching career. Elwyn died in Neath in November 2001, aged 80.
