Biography of Billy Bold |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 156 Billy Bold by SHS Billy Bold was a local lad and the A team full-back at Knowsley Road. He made his senior debut against Bradford on 14 September 1907 at home and, although Saints lost, he showed up well overall. New Boy in the St. Helens Newspaper explained the cirumstances: 'Consternation reigned when, on arrival at the ground, the familiar 'pate' of Atkinson was also seen to be missing. It appears that the Saints full-back had contracted blood poisoning in the hand during the week and this, of course, prevented him filling his usual position. A way out of the difficulty was found by introducing the A Team full-back, a lad named Bold, With regard to the players and taking the home team first, young Bold gave a most creditable display in Atkinson's position. He is practically new to the game but he showed any amount of confidence. He fielded and kicked well and made no mistakes but it was in the tackling department where he was weak. He will, of course, improve in that with experience and in my opinion the Saints have got hold of a promising lad'. It was in the following March that William got another chance, this time at Hunslet and once again, he gave it his best shot. His final match for the club was at Broughton Rangers on 10 October 1909, when the Saints lost 9-19. He was obviously quite a reliable deputy and never let the club down. He died in June 1938 in St Helens at the age of 52. |
