 HERITAGE NO : 848 Bob Blackwood by Alex Service Whitehaven born, Bob signed for the Saints in February 1967. He was a big unit, with great utility value. Consequently he could play in the threequarters or back row with equal effectiveness. He appeared on the left wing in the 1971 Championship Final against Wigan at Station Road, when he scored in the corner to keep Saints hopes alive in the match. The immaculate conversion which followed from Kel Coslett was one of the most crucial in the club`s history, eventually paving the way for Billy Benyons late winning try. Bob was transferred to Widnes in April 1972 for £2,000 and he played in two Floodlit finals, a Lancashire Cup final and a John Player final with the Chemics. He then moved to Wigan where he took part in another Lancashire Cup final before signing for Workington. A Cumbrian county player, with a great appetite for tackling with those spade-like hands, Bob signed for Oldham in 1979. Bob lives in Widnes and is still as interested as ever in matters rugby league. |
