Biography of Billy Belshaw

Looking at the 1901 census, a William Belshaw lived in Gaskell Street in Wigan. His father, of the same name, was a coal miner or hewer. The St.Helens Newspaper of 11th November 1910 announced his signing as follows: "During the week the club signed W.Belshaw a young player from Wigan Athletic, for whom Wigan, Warrington, Barrow and other clubs have angled unsuccessfully. He is slated to be an exceptionally promising player. His team had not yet lost a match in the Wigan and District League and he himself has scored 15 tries this season for them. He is 21 years of age, 5 feet seven and a half inches tall and eleven stones ten pounds. Officials are confident that he and Flanagan will form an ideal wing."

In the 1911 census, Billy is still living with his parents, William and Mary and is described as a 'professional footballer [rugby].' Billy played the majority of his matches for the Saints in the left centre position and did not pair up with Flanagan as anticipated. His partners on the wing included Jack Manchester, Tom Barton and Rev Christopher Chavasse. Billy was well-liked at Knowsley Road and the famous correspondent Tom Reynolds gave this quote about him several years later: "A splendid player, his career was ultimately cut short by successive attacks of influenza." Billy was living in Petticoat Lane, Ince, Wigan in 1939 and his occupation was listed as a General Labourer. He died in Ince in March 1940 at the age of 50.

His son, also called Billy, played with great success for Liverpool Stanley and Warrington and gained full international honours, making eight appearances for his country, including 17 appearances on the 1936 Australasian Tour. He also played in the England versus France international at Knowsley Road in 1939.
