 HERITAGE NO : 255 Isaac Beech by Alex Service This splendidly-named front-rower hailed from Tennyson Street in Sutton Manor, according to the Rugby League signing-on Registers. Ike, as he was known, played twelve matches for the club during his career, scoring a try. He made his First Team debut at home to Warrington on 1st February 1919 which Saints won 8-3. His last game was a Lancashire Cup tie at Broughton Rangers, on 30th October 1920, when the Saints were defeated by 2-6. On leaving Saints he played for Cadishead for a spell. According to his relative, Paul O Connor, Ike was also a well known wrestler in his early days. Doubtless, his strength and technical holds were of a great benefit to the team. Our man is in the news again in the St Helens Newspaper at the end of June, 1936, when he was wrestling once more, this time in Peasley Cross. In fact, the principal contest was between Ike and The Great Borratti from London. Although in the veteran stage, Ike won in the fourth round by two falls to one. In 1939 Ike was living in Melton Street, St Helens and working with the Rescue and Demolition in the ARP, having previously been employed as a Coal Miner. He died in December 1958 at the age of 67.
