Andrew joined the Saints from Hunslet and looked quite at home in the forward pack at Knowsley Road. A big, mobile front-rower, Andy made his debut during Saints superb victory over the visiting Kiwis in 1989 and looked to be set for a successful career with the Saints. He was outstanding against Castleford in the Challenge Cup on 4th January 1990, when his two tries helped un-fancied Saints to a 39-12 success. The starting front-row that day was Evans, Groves and Bateman.

The Leeds fireman was substitute a few months later when Saints Challenge Cup hopes evaporated in controversial circumstances against Wigan at Old Trafford, but Andy was to face a series of injuries that eventually ended his career.

He will always be remembered for his forceful runs as first man in, in what is one of the toughest positions in rugby league. It was just a pity that he was not able to sustain his career as a Saint. His last appearance was as a substitute against Rochdale Hornets on 4th November 1990. The starting front-row was John Harrison, Paul Groves and Kevin Ward. Andy also had spells on loan with Keighley and Sheffield before retiring by 1994.

On receiving his Heritage Number Certificate in October 2020, Andy rued the injuries that he picked up during his time in the red vee, but he still has a tremendous respect for the club and its supporters, in particular.
