Biography of Tony Barrow

HERITAGE NO : 806
Tony Barrow by Dave Dooley:
One of three brothers to join the St.Helens club, Tony spent 8 years at Knowsley Road, before joining Leigh in 1970. A strong defender, ever-alert for the scoring chance, he was renowned for his versatility with both clubs. Tony was substitute for St.Helens in the 1964 Lancashire Cup Final and the 1966 Challenge Cup Final teams. He was in the starting line-up for the 1966 Championship Final success over Halifax at Swinton, following Tom Van Vollenhoven`s withdrawal through injury. Tony was also on the wing for the Saints in their replayed Lancashire Cup Final success against Warrington in the 1967/68 campaign. He was Leigh`s stand-off in the 1971 Challenge Cup Final against Leeds and skippered the Leythers in their 1972 BBC2 Floodlit Final success over Widnes. [Heritage Number 781]Tony later served Warrington and Oldham with distinction as a Coach and spent many years associated with the Swinton club, where he occupied various roles. A rugby league man through and through and a great character to boot!

Tony Barrow was a hard, skilful player for the club playing over 100 matches in the sixties, mostly as a centre. He was a crafty individual with an ability to read the game and distribute timely passes in attacking situations. Born in St Helens, made his debut against Featherstone Rovers on the 20th. of April, 1963 in a 18 points to 5 points victory. Tony made a dream debut for a youngster grabbing a well worked try. The match is also memorable for another great Saint. Kel Coslett played in every match in that 1962/63 season. It just so happened that Tony Barrow?s debut coincided with the only game that season in which Kel did not score a point. In defence Tony, like his brother Frank, was a sound tackler. In his first season Tony played just three matches.

The following season saw Tony plying his trade in the `A` Team as the Saints` side was rebuilt for an assault in the major trophies in the mid 1960s. At the time Saints were blessed with a plethora of young exciting centres on their books including Wood, Benyon, Smith, Williams, Murphy and Keith Northey (Even John Mantle, Tom Van Vollenhoven and Kel Coslett played in the centre in that era).

The 1964/5 season saw Tony collecting his first honours as he was non-playing substitute in the 1964 Lancashire Cup Final as Saints defeated Swinton by 12 points to 4 in front of 17 383 spectators at Central Park, Wigan. Tony started on 17 occasions that season and came on as substitute for one match notching nine tries in the process. This haul included a brace in the away victory over Rochdale Hornets on the 19th. of September 1964.

The following season ended in glorious fashion for Tony Barrow and Saints as the team collected four trophies in their most successful season ever. Tony featured in 8 starts and 3 playing substitutions that season netting six tries. Tony was substitute in the 1966 RL Challenge Cup 21 points to 2 victory over Wigan, as the old enemy were outplayed by a rampant Saints` outlet. One week later Tony started in the 1966 Championship Final at Swinton. His try helped Saints wallop Halifax by 35 points to 12.

The 1966/67 season was Tony`s most prolific in terms of appearances and tries scored. Tony made a total of 41 starts and 2 substitute appearances crossing the tryline on 15 occasions. This try haul included braces aginst Rochdale Hornets (home and away - Tony`s favourite opposition, and two touchdowns in the away match at Blackpool Borough). The following season witnessed Tony playing 13 of his 20 appearances on the wing as Saints tried different partnerships in the centres with Billy Benyon, Frank Myler, Bob Blackwood, Alan Whittle, Peter Douglas and Cenyd Williams all vying for a first team place. Following 12 appearances in the 1968/69 season first team jerseys were at a premium and Tony looked to pastures new to continue his career. His last selection for the first team was on the 29th. of August, 1970 as he remained on the bench for the whole 80 minutes watching Saints beat his next club, Leigh, by 26 points to 7 at Knowsley Road.

Tony Barrow played 112 times for the Saints (+ 26 as non-playing substitute). He scored a total of 38 tries for an aggregate score of 114 points. Tony applied his love and understanding of the game to pursue a successful coaching career at Warrington, Oldham and Swinton.

The Barrow family (Tony, Frank and Billy), alongside the Karaliuses, the Creeveys and the Cunninghams, hold the distinction of providing three brothers who have made first team appearances for the Saints. Tony Barrow a man with Rugby League in his blood!
