James Barnes had quite a distinguished record at club level at Knowsley Road, with 141 appearances and 31 tries, normally from left-centre. He had the build and pace for that position and gradually asserted himself in the First Team after making his debut in the inaugural Northern Union season in 1895-96 in the 5-5 draw at Warrington on February 29th 1896. He was 18 or thereabouts. He also played in the first Challenge Cup final,just over twelve months later when regular centre Sutton broke his collar bone in the semi-final against Swinton.

By the turn of the century, he was a key member of the St.Helens team. During the 1900-01 campaign, James, or Jim as he was known, made 29 appearances, missing just one game, scoring 9 tries. He could also kick goals too. Born in St. Helens, it is presumed he joined the club from the local junior competitions. He played his last match as a Saint at home to Hull on 1st April 1905 in a relatively un-distinguished 0-13 defeat. The team ended the season second from bottom of the table in the First Division and looked to be heading for the Second Division, until the leagues were re-constituted into one the following year.

Around 1903-04 Jim was unhappy and wanted a transfer away from the Saints, according to the Club Minutes. On 15th February 1904 one entry read: "letter from Barnes asking for his transfer. Barnes to state what club he desires to go to and let them apply for a transfer". Fortunately, it all came to nought and Jim went on to produce some of the best rugby of his career afterwards!

It has to be said that Jim was a stalwart when the Saints were at one of their lowest ebbs and his contribution to the team was much valued. He was a popular figure with the supporters but it is sad to relate that he passed away relatively young, at the age of 53 in March 1931. There was hardly a mention in the local press although it appears that Jim was living in Liverpool [Marmaduke Street] at the time of his death. He was survived by his wife and three sons and a daughter. The funeral was a small affair, with nobody present from his old club, which seems quite sad, given his terrific record. Yet they were different times and people had moved on.
