James Atkinson by Alex Service

James Atkinson was signed from Chadderton. He played 45 matches for the Saints over two seasons and was easily recognisable with his receding hair. James made his debut at the start of the 1906-07 campaign, against Swinton and was essentially a full-back, although he did fill in at left centre. The following year saw James play in both matches at Knowsley Road against the visiting `All Golds` New Zealand team. Ironically, the full-back in the visiting team, Jum Turtill, eventually took over the full-back position for St. Helens. James left the club after the 1907-08 campaign and his playing progress then is unknown. He did return to Live in his native County to work as a bricklayer. In 1939 James was living in Ulverston Road, Dalton in Furness. His death is recorded in Barrow in Furness in December 1954 at the age of 74.
