Biography of John Ashcroft

HERITAGE NO : 167
The local-born glass splitter signed for the Saints in 1907. He was a tough forward and played two matches in 1908 and 1910. Unfortunately both matches ended in defeat for the Saints. His debut was at Hunslet, when the Saints lost 6-21. Winger Jack Manchester scored one of the tries for the visitors and eventually signed for the Yorkshire club. The forwards that day lined up as follows: Billy Briers, Jack Pope, Jimmy Mavitty, Frank Lee, John Ashcroft and the evergreen Cuddy Pennington.

In 1911 we have John living at 144 Peasley Cross Road, St Helens. In 1939 he was living in Charles Street, although the date of his passing is not known. Can you help the SHS by supplying his photograph or any other personal or playing details?
