 HERITAGE NO : 9 Edward Ashcroft by Alex Service Thatto Heath-born Ned Ashcroft was a forward who took part in the first Northern Union match played by the Saints, at home to Rochdale Hornets in 1895. He played for the club previously and won a medal when the club was promoted as Champions into the Lancashire First Division at the end of the 1893-94 season. The medal itself survives in pristine condition to this day. Ned did not play in the 1896-97 season for whatever reason, whether from injury or work commitments, but played later although spasmodically. In 1921 Ned was living in Cairo Street, St. Helens with his wife, Mary, who hailed from St Helens, son George and daughters jessie and Deborah. He was a General Labourer at the Nutall Glass Bottle Works in Ravenhead. Ned still lived in Cairo Street, St Helens in 1939 and was employed as a glass stopper maker. He died in St Helens in June 1941 aged 71. A redoubtable forward, he was good friends on and off the field with his fellow Thatto Heathens Tom Foulkes and Billy Briers. His grand-daughter, Ann Roby, was proud to accept his Heritage Number Certificate in October 2020. | ||||
