This smooth running centre was signed from local amateur outfit Hare and Hounds ARL on the 8 October 1982. Shaun had knack of giving the perfect timely pass and was a very sound defender. He made his debut against Castleford on the 11th. of September 1983 in the 22 points to 10 home loss. Shaun scored his first try for the Saints in the match against Wakefield Trinity when the Saints went down by 31 points to 22 on January 8th, 1984. He went on to score another 3 tries that season including a brace against Oldham in a match when Shaun played on the wing.

The signing of Mal Meninga and Phil Veivers sent a tsunami of optimism through the town and filled the team with confidence for the 1984/5 campaign. Under the astute direction of coach Billy Benyon, Shaun and the Saints mounted their assault on the game`s prizes. Meninga`s presence inspired great confidence in the team and Shaun enjoyed his best ever season with the Saints. His first honour with the first team came in the momentous Lancashire Cup Final when a sparkling team performance defeated the old foe in their own backyard. Throughout the campaign he hardly missed a game scoring five tries in 36 appearances. In the last match of the campaign Shaun was substitute returned as Saints dominated Hull KR in the Premiership Final by 36 points to 16 at Elland Road. In the last move of the match Shaun was on hand to follow up a Neil Holding break and deliver a signature lobbed pass to Barrie Ledger. Shaun cheered with the rest of us as his wingman raced in for the final try unopposed.

Shaun operated in much the same vein the following season although Saints missed out on the silverware despite an extended unbeaten run in the league at the end of the season. For the 1986/7 campaign the Saints were blessed with talent in the centres. Shaun had to compete for places in the team with the likes of Paul Loughlin, Steve Halliwell, Mark Elia and Steve Bayliss. Opportunities were relatively few but Shaun occupied the substitutes bench on no less than 16 occasions as well as making 13 starts in the centre, second row and even loose forward. In this capacity he demonstrated his utility value to the team. It was the competition that robbed Shaun of a place in the 1987 Challenge Cup Final against Halifax.

The following season was virtually a wipeout for Shaun as his only two starts were at hooker and in the second row. He did return to the bench for the last four matches of the season. He watched his team-mates carry off the John Player Cup in February 1988. His last season with the club brought him more into contention with 6 starts and 8 appearances from the substitutes bench. His only try that campaign was against Widnes in the first round loss in the Lancashire Cup. Shaun`s final match in Saints` colours was against Bradford Northern on the 19th of February 1989 as Saints prevailed by 16 points to 12.

Shaun Allen`s career stretched six seasons over 145 appearances (92 starts and 53 substitute appearances) in which he scored 18 tries but set up many more for his wingers in red and white.
