MATCH REPORT : Saints took an early lead at the John Smith’s Stadium. After an error from Ashton Golding deep inside his own half, Saints pounced on the loose ball ten metres out. A few tackles in, Saints moved it left and Jonny Lomax threw a dummy before slicing through a gap to score in the corner. Jon Bennison nailed the conversion, 0-6 Saints led. Huddersfield looked to reply soon after. They shifted the ball to their left edge and Elliot Wallis looked to break, Tee Ritson was able to ankle tap him though and the Giants winger lost the ball in contact with the floor. Midway through the first half, the hosts did get back into it. Again, they shifted the ball down the left edge, Tui Lolohea found Wallis who dove over in the corner. The on-field verdict of try was agreed with by the video referee. Oliver Russell converted, 6-6 it was tied. They added another try quickly after. Harry Robertson fumbled Adam Clune’s high kick which gifted the hosts ball in good field position. A few tackles into the set, they moved it right and Lolohea threw a cut-out pass to Jake Bibby who strolled over in the corner. Russell missed the conversion, 10-6 Saints trailed. Saints could have levelled just before the break. Lomax put Robertson through a gap, he moved downfield and tried to find Ritson but then pass went to ground and the Giants recovered it. Just before the break, Huddersfield were reduced to twelve men. Ritson went into a tackle and was caught high by Rogers, with the Giants man seeing red for the tackle. That was the final action of the first half, as Saints trailed 10-6 at the break. Saints looked to be in five minutes into the second half. They moved the ball left, Lomax throwing a cut-out pass to Bennison who scored in the corner. It was brought back however for a forward pass. They weren’t to be denied for much longer though. Again, Saints went left and Moses Mbye found Sione Mata’utia who stepped back inside, broke a tackle and then dove over to level the scores. Bennison put Saints ahead with the conversion, 10-12. A couple of minutes later, we had a trip to the video referee. Lomax threw a pass to the wing which Ritson collected and broke away down the right wing, he found Robertson in support who crossed for his first Saints try. The try was awarded after a quick check to see if the Saints winger had collected the ball. Bennison added two more points, 10-18 Saints led. Three minutes later, we went upstairs again. A high kick by Mbye was fumbled around and eventually ended up running out in goal. The on-field verdict of no try was agreed with, and Huddersfield had a seven-tackle set on their twenty. With nine minutes to go, Saints were then reduced to twelve men until the end of the game. Noah Stephens prevented Huddersfield taking a quick restart and saw yellow. Despite it ending twelve men a-piece, no further scores followed. Saints maintaining their push for a playoff race with a 10-18 victory over the Giants in West Yorkshire. Thanks to the Saints Media Centre for their excellent report. |
