Biography of Jimmy Measures |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 754 Jim Measures by Dave Dooley: Jim Measures was a strong, fast forward, who made his debut for the Saints at Rochdale in August 1958. Equally at home in the second row or at blind side prop, this former Blackbrook junior signed for Widnes as part of the deal that took loose forward Bill Major to Knowsley Road in October 1962. The only forward who scored a hat-trick of tries for Lancashire in a Roses match under the old competition format, Jim also played at Wembley twice in the same season. On October 16th 1963 he made the first of his two appearances for Great Britain against Australia in the floodlit Test Match. Several months later, he was in the Widnes team that defeated Hull KR in the Challenge Cup Final. Jim moved on to Rochdale shortly after, but could only play a few games for them before retiring prematurely with a degenerative injury to the kneecap. He made a winning start with the first team on the 19th of August 1958 in the 15 points to 5 victory over Rochdale Hornets. Jim even managed to score a well-taken try in his first match. Measures made another eight appearances in that Championship winning season. After playing just three matches in the following campaign, Jim seemed to be settling into the side during the 1960/61 season when he played a total of 27 matches scoring six tries in the process. After a sound performance for the Saints against the Australians Jim missed out on selection for 1960 and 1961 Lancashire Cup Finals and 1961 Challenge Cup Final. At the time the talented forwards squad included Vines and Huddart in the second row with a young Cliff Watson and experienced Fred Leyland vying for the number 10 jersey and Measures missed out on the big occasions. With just two appearances in the first half of the 1961/2 season Jim`s talents were not being exploited to the full. This player of obvious potential had to realise that promise at near neighbours Widnes over the next few seasons. |
