A hooker who came out of Canterbury Street, George made his debut for the Saints against Leigh at Mather Lane on 31st October 1936, not an easy assignment for the young player, it has to be said. In the match report in the St. Helens Newspaper it stated that his own effectiveness had been hampered by a rugby union trialist playing number 8, who was given the pseudonym Johnson. For all that, George proved to be a reliable number nine when called upon in what were difficult years for the Knowsley Road club. He played in 74 matches all told, scoring just a single try. His Saints` career extended into the war years too and he made his final appearance against Bradford Northern in April 1945.If anyone can tell us what happened to George in terms of his rugby career we would like to hear from you.

In 1921 George was living with his parents in Albion Street, St Helens. His father, James, was a furniture maker and dealer with premises in Perth Street, St Helens. In 1939 he was working as a Joiner in an Aircraft Factory and living in Link Avenue, St Helens. He died in February 1996, aged 81 and his death was registered in Sefton North.
