Biography of Wilf O Mara |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 734 Signed from Liverpool City, Wilf O Mara played two matches for the Saints in March and April 1956. He was a hooker and both matches ended in victory for the Saints over Wigan and Whitehaven. Wilf was an experienced hooker and a regular for Liverpool City. He signed for the Saints in the twilight of his career. According to newspaper reports he was referred to as Expensive O Mara, a splendid nickname. Wilf hung up his boots following his stint with the Saints. In 1939 we believe that Wilf was working at the Royal Ordnance Factory in Euxton and living with his father Michael and mother Mary at 1 Brook Street, Wigan. His granddaughter related some aspects of Wilf’s life outside rugby. Before, during and after World War Two he worked as a toolmaker in the Royal Ordnance Factory in Euxton. After the War Wilf did his National Service in Egypt. Chrissie informs us that her grandad once dropped a bayonet through his foot whilst on duty in the Home Guard in Chester. He passed away in Wigan in February 2005 at the age of 83. Thanks to Chrissie Jennings, for information about her Granddad Wilf and the wonderful photograph. Dave Dooley |
