Biography of Dick Glover

HERITAGE NO : Dick Glover by SHS The following article appeared in the St.Helens Newspaper and Advertiser on 26th November 1920. Old Black and Amber I remember playing with Dick in the Nomads and amateur matches somewhat about 1903 or 1904. I think Dick signed on for Saints about 1905 but he was such a little chap that it was some time before he got a chance in the A Team. That was in a Shield tie and Dick scored all the points, so Dick did very well. It was simply his size that kept him out of the First Team, though Billy Briers often tried to get him a chance. I think he did get a couple of matches in the First Team but there was too much prejudice against him for his size. When the Recs started playing rugby, Dick put it to the Saints that with his experience he might be able to do himself and the Recs some good if they would let him go, so the Recs and Saints Committees agreed. As far as I can recollect that would be about 1912-13. Whilst playing for Recs he broke some bones in his hand and the Committee appointed him A Team Trainer. Is this the same Dickie Glover who had a fish and chip saloon in Corporation Street? If you have any further information about this player please contact us.
