One of the hardest centres ever to play for the Saints, reminiscent in this respect of fellow-Welsh signing of the 1950s Don Gullick, Scott Gibbs remains a favourite for anyone who watched him during his unfortunately short career at Knowsley Road. Born in Bridgend, Scott played for Bridgend, Neath, and Swansea by January 1992. A stocky, powerful man, he made his debut for Wales in 1991 against England and was a surprise selection for the 1993 British Lions squad for their tour to New Zealand in 1993. He was always a controversial figure in his early years, however and in 1994 he became a flagship signing by the Saints, who, of course, had a fine tradition for bringing in star players from the Valleys. In actual fact, since Rugby Union has become professional, the supply of talent has virtually dried up. Scott is the last of a fine line of top Welshmen to play with distinction for the Saints.

It was a time of change at Knowsley Road, with Coach Eric Hughes gradually building a team that would challenge the might of Wigan in the Super League era. Scott scored twice on his home debut, against Widnes in a pre-season friendly at Knowsley Road and his forceful running and kamikaze tackling certainly endeared him to the fans. Although essentially a right centre, he played at stand-off for the Saints in one particular match, against Oldham at the Watersheddings, when the visitors won 44-18, yet there was only one true position for him.

The Saints dominated the inaugural season of the European Super League in 1996, becoming Champions, with Scott forming a potent combination with Young Gun Danny Arnold on the right flank. Arnold went on to score 25 tries in 21 appearances, including a brace at Wembley, when the Saints won a magnificent match 40-32 after one of the greatest come-backs ever seen at the famous old stadium in a Challenge Cup final. Scott's appearances were restricted to just 13 during the campaign, scoring 6 tries. It was a pity that a nasty hand injury at Charlton, in the vital match against London Broncos, effectively finished his season and his Saints' career to boot.

He returned to Union where he continued to enjoy great success. Scott used the strength and power he gained in the handling code to excel on the 1997 Lions Tour to South Africa and played in the last-ever Five Nations match for Wales against England at Wembley, where he scored a superb individual try. He was also selected for the 2001 Lions Tour, but did not play in any Test matches. A member of the BBCs commentary team for Rugby Union, he was last seen at Knowsley Road during a cameo appearance in the Stephen Prescott Legends game, where flashes of the old power were there for all to see.
