Biography of Derek Bellard

HERITAGE NO : 684

Derek Bellard by Alex Service

Derek Bellard was a natural full-back who played four First Team games for the club. Three were at the back end of the 1948-49 season when there were injuries to full-backs Joe Ball and Jimmy Lowe. Looking at the A team records for the late 1940s it can be seen that Derek was a solid and reliable servant to the Knowsley Road club. He could turn out anywhere in the threequarters with equal effectiveness and played his last game in the First Team against Workington in March 1950 and the former New Church Tavern junior was later transferred to Swinton. His son Mark informs us that Derek was always very proud to represent his hometown club. Mark continued that during his time with the Saints and representing the British Army at both Rugby and Football were points of huge pride in his life. In 1939 Derek was living in Africander Road, St.Helens. He worked in the engineering sheer and died in May 1999, aged 73 and his death was registered in Knowsley.
