Biography of Joel Thompson |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 1259 Thompson had scored 62 tries in 234 games for Canberra, St George Illawarra and Sea Eagles in a 14-year career in the NRL. He had also captained the Indigenous All Stars representative team. A strong running second row forward with sound tackling technique he was a natural replacement for Zeb Taia. The Sea Eagles granted Thompson a release from the final year of his deal to take up a contract with St.Helens for the 2021 campaign. Thompson, nicknamed ‘Goat’, had vast experience in the NRL after making his debut in 2008 with Canberra in 2008, before stints with the St George Illawarra Dragons in 2014 and then the Sea Eagles in 2018. In 2020 he captained the Indigenous All Stars in his seventh appearance for the side whilst he was also an influential figure off-the-field, a strong advocate for both Indigenous voices and mental health, founding The Mindset project in 2012 and being awarded the Ken Stephen Medal in 2016 for his community work. The 2021 season produced mixed fortunes for Joel. A strong defensive player, Joel featured regularly in the team especially in the first half of the campaign. Indeed Joel made 19 appearances for the team. The highlight for Joel was undoubtedly the Challenge Cup Final at Wembley when he helped the Saints overcome Castleford. None the less Joel was not convinced that he was performing as well as he had in the past. Subsequently, he informed the Club that he was intending to return to Australia at the conclusion of the 2021 campaign. Nobody was surprised with his honesty and integrity in this regard. Though he did not participate in the triumphant Grand Final win over the Catalans Dragons he was on hand to join in the celebrations. Dave Dooley |
