Biography of Leon Pryce

When Leon Pryce arrived at the Saints he had already collected a bagful of honours with Bradford Bulls and Great Britain and he was still only 24 years of age. Leon has had a fruitful three years at Knowsley Road, reveling in a permanent role at stand-off. His elusive running style, developed as a winger, made him a potent attacker that was showcased in consecutive Grand Finals, playing for Bradford Bulls and scoring the critical try in 2005 finale when he received the Harry Sunderland Trophy. Donning the red vee in 2006 he scored a beautiful try just before half time in the Saints victory over Hull FC. Leon had completed a league and challenge cup double with the Saints in 2006.

Pryce took his opportunity in Super League, and was voted Young Player of the Year by the Rugby League Writers in 1999 while also making his England debut against France.The following season he played for Great Britain in the World Cup. In 2005, he completed a career century of club and representative tries, of which 92 were for his previous club, Bradford Bulls. From there he has continued to lead the way in the stand off position and was one of the outstanding performers in the Gillette Fusion Test Series against New Zealand in 2007.

The 2007 season saw Leon on the top of his game yet again as the plays, points and plaudits came his way. His defence was noticably improving but his campaign was highlighted by his prowess in attacking play. As Leon collected another Challenge Cup winning medal in the comfortable win over Catalans Dragons he was named joint Lance Todd Trophy winner with Paul Wellens. The Saints finished top of the tree for a third year in succession but the Grand Final loss against Leeds was one to forget.

The 2008 campaign saw Leon have a brilliant season of league games. The highlight for Pryce and the Saints was a third successive Challenge Cup Final victory over Hull FC. The season followed a similar pattern to the 2007 campaign as Saints finished on top of the league for a fourth time in a row only to lose out to Leeds in the Grand Final at Old Trafford. Leon ended the campaign with a tally of 44 tries from 95 matches for the Saints.

The year was to end in more disappointment for Leon as the England team failed to sparkle in the 2008 World Cup in Australia.

The 2009 season proved to be a roller coaster for the Saints. The ride however, ultimately ended in disappointment as the Saints trophy cabinet was laid bare for the first time since the 2003 campaign. Some sparkling performances were punctuated with below par matches as the club shaped a new team for the future and youth was given its head.

Leon ended the campaign at the top of the club try scoring charts with nineteen touchdowns. This haul included a hat trick in the away league victory over Wakefield Trinity Wildcats. He also cracked the 100 appearances landmark for the Saints.

The last two seasons at the Saints proved a grave anti climax for Leon as serious injuies severely curtailed his appearances and robbed him of another two Grand Final appearances. In 2012 Leon moved on to pastures new as he began another phase of his career with the Catalans Dragons. Leon then returned to England with Hull FC, before a last hurrah with Bradford Bulls. He then went into coaching with Workington Town.
