Biography of Dave Wood |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 823 Dave Wood played in 17 matches for the Saints between November 1964 and December 1965. The Aussie made a sensational start for the Saints scoring five tries in his first three matches. He played on the right wing and in the centre. Dave scored a total of 8 tries for the Saints including a classy hat trick against Whitehaven on the 30th of August, 1965 when he played centre to Tom Van Vollenhoven. Dave DooleyDavid Wood by Adrian Lawrenson The fourth Australian to don Saints’ colours after Rupert Upton, Lenny Kenny and Max Garbler, Dave signed for Saints from Redfern Rugby Club in Australia on 3rd December 1964 and was also a renowned sprinter. He made his debut in place of Tom Pimblett on the wing as a trialist on 21st November 1964 scoring a try in the 37-3 victory over Barrow. At the start of the 1965-66 season, Dave was selected for the Commonwealth XIII tour game against the New Zealand, which the tourists won 15-7 at Crystal Palace, in August 1965. This followed a run in the first team at right centre which ended on 14th December 1965 when Castleford won 0-4 at Knowsley Road in the Floodlit trophy final. In total, Dave played in 17 matches and scored 8 tries. None of his 7 other tries had had quite the impact of the one he scored against Castleford on 28th August 1965. It was a stormy game and a fired-up Alex Murphy reacted to Castleford’s fans’ protestations over Dave Wood’s try, claiming it was a double movement. The die was cast and it ended with the Saints’ team being pelted with coins. Not to worry. Saints won 19-15. The repercussions of Dave Wood being left out of the team later were seismic. His replacement was Alex Murphy and what happened next is another story. |
