Barry Ward by Dave Dooley:

Darren Britt`s Canterbury teammate joined Saints to replace retired prop David Fairleigh. He began his ARL career with Ian Millward`s St George-Illawarra, scoring six tries in 105 games in the ARL including 12 appearances for the Bulldogs in 2001.

He was born Barry William Ward on the 13th. of January, 1971. Barry signed for the Saints on the 16th of October 2001 and made his debut against Widnes on the second of March 2002. In his first season he made 7 starts and came on as substitute on 24 occasions. His first points for the Club were in the home victory over Salford on the 8th of March, 2002. He also crossed the line in the 56 points to 6 home demolition of Widnes on the 25th. of May 2002. In Barry`s final outing of 2002 against the New Zealand touring team Ward demonstrated an unknown facet of his repertoire when he kicked three goals in the respectable 38 points to 26 defeat by the Kiwis.

His greatest moment of his first season with the Saints came the week before the touring match when Saints defeated the Bradford Bulls in the most dramatic of finals and finales in the cauldron of Old Trafford! Barry started that game and more than mixed and matched it with the gruesome Bulls pack.

Ian Millward used Barry mostly as an impact player, with his barnstorming runs and high impact tackles. Ward also featured as substitute in the 2002 Challenge Cup as Saints lost to the old enemy Wigan by 21 points to 12 in a disappointing below par team performance. Barry returned Down Under to continue his association with the Canterbury Bulldogs and was also into the property business.
