Biography of Victor Walsh |
---|
![]() ![]() HERITAGE NO : 418 Victor John Walsh by Alex Service It is quite appropriate that the image of Victor shows him in military uniform. A Sergeant in the Royal Engineers during the Second World War, he received a Citation from the King as a result of his bravery in action. It should also be noted that he was given the name Victor as a result of being born on Empire Day 24th May 1911. Quite appropriate, especially in his future circumstances. A centre who made four appearances for the First Team, he lived, according to the Rugby League Registers in Oldfield Street when he first signed for the club on 23rd August 1932. It is presumed that Walsh was essentially an A Team regular, because his senior appearances are over a reasonably long period, but there were extenuating circumstances, as we shall see later. His first match was at left centre at home to Leeds on 21st January 1934, when his wing partner was the New Zealander Roy Hardgrave, who scored a try. The winger scored two in the next match, a 23-8 victory at Hull KR, with Walsh once again in the left centre berth. Walsh`s last match was on 21st November 1936 when the Saints crashed 0-20 against Salford. The home threequarter line was Peter Smith, Walsh, Ossie Jones and Izzy Davies. His grandson is Steve Saxon, who enjoyed success at schoolboy and youth level and as a Colts player at Knowsley Road. “He never really spoke much about the war or his rugby days,” says Steve. “One thing I do know is that he was a big man and very strong, but he broke his shoulder three times and eventually he had to give the game up. He gave me his Players Pass as a memento, which I still have to this day.” Victor passed away on 11th December 1995. Thanks to Steve for providing such important information about his grandad. |
